Use Case title: Distributed Grid operations and support of interoperating national and regional Grids

Short description: Building blocks of Grid infrastructures are individual Grid sites. Currently, various project-level national and regional Grid operations centres are managing those Grid sites, in terms of identification of operational problems and in providing support for solving problems. This creates, in some cases, managerial overlap for sites participating in multiple Grids. Such situation should be avoided, and distributed collaborative Grid operations in EGI members established.

Actors involved: EGI, national and regional Grids, Grid sites/resource providers

Related Requirement: Establishing of close collaboration between national and regional Grid projects and EGI regarding the sharing of experiences in Grid operations.

Pre-conditions (optional): Participating national and regional Grids should commit human and hardware resources for work on distributed Grid operations and support.

Steps:

  1. Agreement on common testing procedures and tests to be performed, so that overlap is avoided wherever possible:
    • Some components/resources, assessed to be of vital importance, may be tested centrally
    • Distributed testing would assume that each participating national or regional project tests central services/Grid sites/resource providers within its scope
    • User-oriented testing would assume VOs performing tests central services/Grid sites/resource providers based on their real use-cases
Clearly, the adopted testing procedure would be a combination of all scenarios above. Of course, actors interested in testing features that are not identified to be of common interest will perform such specialized tests using their own procedures. EGI should provide a framework for integration of different testing procedures into a coherent set, which prevents duplication of work.
  2. Interoperation of different support systems (e.g. based on intercommunication between GGUS and ROC support systems in EGEE), so that each actor (user, grid operator/manager, site/resource administrator) is able to ask for support/provide support/provide feedback using a single support access point, provided by the appropriate EGI member.
  3. Each EGI member provides operational support for resources/users within its scope.
  4. Continuous review of common testing procedures and tests to be performed. Creation of working group on testing/monitoring would be needed. If centralized monitoring for some components/resources is agreed, this working group may provide framework for this, or some of EGI members can volunteer.
  5. Feedback and shared knowledge database from different support system should be publicly available.
