Use Case title: Identification of Common Criteria to Assess New and Existing Grid Applications

Short description: Number and variety of grid applications increase in parallel with sustainability and enlargement of grid infrastructures. In order to achieve best results from gridification of applications, EGI should provide NGIs and regional projects with a common practice to assess applications both at national and regional level. Use of these common evaluation criteria will enable utilization of grid resources and better progress of applications.

Actors involved: EGI partner countries, SEE-GRID-2, other interested regional projects.

Related Requirement: Establishment of close collaboration between grid projects and EGI regarding the sharing of experiences in related workpackages of projects.

Pre-conditions: (optional)

  • All actors that could contribute to this UC should be identified.
  • A collaboration framework among actors involved should be prepared.

Steps:

  1. Collect information from projects and NGIs about procedures for application assessment.
  2. Categorize the collected information in two main bodies:
    • Evaluation criteria for new potential grid applications to prioritize them to run on the infrastructures.
    • Evaluation criteria for existing grid applications to assess their progress and give some recommendations. Progress assessment should include resource utilization and ongoing impact within user community.
  3. Based on collected information, decide on common criteria for both of the categories in step 2.

Post-conditions (optional):

  • A common practice will be implemented among EGI partners and regional projects to assess the grid applications.
  • Utilization of grid resources will be enabled by prioritization of new candidate applications.
  • Scientific and social impact of applications will increase by their progress assessment.
  • Based on the application assessment results at project and/or national level, EGI can decide on specific application fields to focus on, which will lead to interdisciplinary and/or regional applications with a large user community and significant social impact. (e.g. SEE-GRID-SCI project will focus on earth science, meteorology and environmental sciences.)

Project(s) involved (optional): EGI_SD, SEE-GRID-2, other interested regional projects.

Middleware (optional): Not applicable.

Application(s) (optional): Not applicable.
