Use Case title: Disaster Prediction

Short description: UK NGS access to larger peak resources to address potential disasters urgently. Existing users of the UK NGS wish to use the largest available resources to urgently address potential disasters in a series of disciplines:

  • Earth sciences – modelling of volcanic and earthquake activity following identified abnormalities in order to predict potential disaster.
  • Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences – modelling of tsunami potential following data on earthquake or volcanic activity.

Users will have identified UK e-Science certificates to identify them.

The NGS cannot provide sufficient resources in time to predict the potential disasters. The greater the resources available the finer the resolution of the simulations that can be run, and the more accurate the predictions can be of the time and severity of the potential disaster. This case can only be fulfilled by the largest available resource – therefore it cannot be fulfilled by national resources.

The class of computational and data storage resources required will vary. Most of the computation is a style of CFD. The more tightly coupled processing, and the more like conventional HPC resources, then the more appropriate to perform this class of computation.
