Use Case title: Adaptation of commercial software to Grid environment
Short description: Many communities and/or scientific groups of users use software developed by commercial companies to conduct their research. The Grid, with its resources, is a very attractive platform for such users, however porting software to the Grid platform can, in many cases, be difficult. This use case aims at presenting certain steps which have to be applied to make commercial software available on the Grid.
Actors involved: Software manager, VO manager, RC operator, NGI operator, company developing software of interest (if necessary)
Related requirement: Stable license server (if required by application)
Steps
- Analysis of license requirements (and negotiation with software company if necessary)
- Implementation of software license requirements in the Grid environment (new VO creation or modification of group roles of existing VO, license server setup, implementation of security issues concerning software binaries, etc.)
- Software deployment to certain/all sites
Post-conditions (optional) Monitoring of users' compliance with license restrictions

Application(s) (optional): Application of interest: chemical and biological (Gaussian suite from Gaussian, Inc.; Charmm & Castep from Accelrys, etc.)
