Use case title: Virtual heart simulator
Short description: A grid-enabled collaboration between computer centers and hospitals for improved diagnosis and treatment of cardiac diseases.
Actors involved: Simula Research Laboratory (numerical computations, infrastructure), Haugeland Hospital (patient data, end-user), Rikshospitalet (patient data, end-user)
Related requirement: Massive amount of patient data must be efficiently transferred and deployed on a multi-institutional computing grid. Access of massive computing power must be transparent and of high throughput for the user ends. Real-time 3D visualization tools must be flexibly deployed on the grid.
Pre-conditions: High-speed and high-throughput interconnect must be established between the actors. There need to be real-time tools for patient data acquisition and pre-processing. The 3D numerical computations needed for the subsequent diagnosis and treatment must be able to effectively utilize massive parallel platforms. There exist grid-supported tools for advanced 3D visualizations.
Steps:
- An integrated user portal (for the hospital users) through which patient data acquisition, pre-processing, numerical computations, analysis, and visualization can be carried out as an integrated procedure.
- Performance improvement of all the involved components such that the above integrated procedure can be carried out interactively at real-time.
Post-condition: Our ambition is to create a grid-enabled diagnosis/treatment tool for everyday use at hospitals.
Project involved: The cardiac computations project at Simula Research Laboratory in collaboration with Norwegian hospitals.
