Use Case title: Brain Perfusion Application

Short description: The objective of the Medical Applications on Brain Images is to allow doctors to develop complex techniques for diagnostic on brain images and to conduct testing of new algorithms by fast processing of large volumes of data.

The first prototype being developed for the Brain Diagnosis Applications corresponds to perfusion studies where sequential images of the same slice of a patient's brain from a computer tomography scan. Using as reference two pixels selected by the doctor, the application generates three maps of the brain for certain parameters, and another one combining them and some additional information to generate a map signalling the most affected zones of the brain. The application also allows to visualize and annotate DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) images.

In particular the input of the application consists of 45 CT brain images in DICOM format. Using as reference an artery and a vein three parameters should be computed for each pixel: blood flow, blood volume and average transition time. With this information the program would show a brain map showing the affected zone, and death tissue probability estimations.

The application is in phase of development, and a sequential program version is already ported to int.eu.grid.
