Use Case title: Installation of grid sites in the Mediterranean area.

Short description:

Actors involved: All e-Infrastructure providers

Related Requirement: Agreements between project coordination and local site administrators. Definition of site policies and resource certification.

Pre-conditions: The EUMEDCONNECT/GEANT project results providing reliable network connections, WP2 efforts collecting requirements, WP5 creating synergies and encouraging the creation of new Grid Initiatives.

Steps: Taking as input the regional requirements collected by WP2 and the technical roadmap produced by this Workpackage, WP3 will undertake a number of measures in order to support the successful deployment and operation of the regional pilot Grid infrastructure. This workpackage will select and adapt the middleware solutions produced by the leading Grid projects, with the focus on the latest EGEE middleware based on Web Services. Thanks to the support of the more-experienced Partners, the assessment of the available hardware resources (storage, computing power, connectivity) will be carried out, and the local configurations and customisation will be done on the pilot clusters. During the first year of the project it was ensured the establishment of one stable pilot cluster in each beneficiary country, and interoperability was achieved in the pilot infrastructure. To allow this, it was established a catchall Certification Authority (CA) for the region, which will issue user and machine certificates to entities in the countries, which did not have an established CA. Related CA, and Registration Authority guidelines were also established.

Post-conditions: Thanks to the new available resources, new scientific communities are joining to the e-Infrastructure promoting the e-Science paradigm. The expansion of the user community means that they will be able to disseminate the grid knowledge amongst their colleagues and then creating a “chain reaction”. The EUMEDGRID Pilot Testbed counts at least one site in each country for a total number of about 500 CPU cores and more than 30 TB of storage;

Middleware: New Grid site installations are performed installing EGEE gLite Grid Services. EGEE Monitoring tools are also installed for the maintenance of the e-Infrastructure.
