UC-EUMEDGrid-infrastructure
From EGI Knowledge Base
Use Case title: Creation of a Regional Infrastructure as an extension of EGEE to the North African and Middle East Countries.
Short description: The core of the EUMEDGRID approach is to establish a human network in the eScience area, enlarge and disseminate advanced grid know-how to this community, thus enabling the deployment of a pilot Grid infrastructure supporting proof-of-concept regional applications.
Actors involved: All project partners and related work packages: WP1 Coordination, WP2 Collecting requirements, WP3 Infrastructure, WP4 Applications, WP5 Dissemination. All scientific communities and related end users.
Related Requirement for partners: All partners are involved to foster the creation of National Grid Initiatives in the Mediterranean countries in order to support scientific communities and stimulate the sustainability effort of nascent and existent National Grid Infrastructures. Thus encouraging the creation of a “virtual Grid-based research space”.
Pre-conditions: A number of initiatives across Europe were already accomplished in deploying and operating the European-wide eInfrastructure with the GEANT and EGEE projects. Such e-Infrastructure has been widened, as a result of a number of initiatives taken in this area between Europe and developing countries all around the world. Grid e-Infrastructure has a strategic relevance to foster collaboration between researchers from Europe and Mediterranean countries and to contribute towards bridging the digital divide among areas with different levels of technological development. This has been done by building upon the network developments achieved through EUMEDCONNECT / GEANT projects, as well as through strong liaisons with the EGEE project and the experience of other regional initiatives such as SEEGRID and SEEREN.
