Use Case title: Creation of a pilot intercontinental Infrastructure extending the European Grid infrastructures in China and interoperating with the equivalent Chinese Grid Infrastructures, in line with the support of the intercontinental extension of the European Research Area (ERA).

Short description: The EUChinaGRID project aims to create a grid-empowered e-Infrastructures between Europe and China, exploiting the sharing of a larger set of computing resources, scientific instrumentation and data facilities across multiple scientific disciplines.

Actors involved: All project partners and related work packages: WP1 Management of the Project, WP2 Network planning and Interoperability Study, WP3 Pilot Infrastructure & Operational Support, WP4 Applications, WP5 Dissemination. All scientific communities and related end users.

Related Requirement for partners: All project partners are involved to increase the collaboration between China and Europe and to spread the Grid knowledge and usage in the countries involved. This aim is achieved identifying new potential users, training the largest possible number of users to use and adopt the grid technology for their scientific work and supporting the scientific communities in porting their application on the grid. A relevant effort is requested to design, development and deploy the tools needed to allow the interoperability between Chinese and European grid infrastructures and, so, create a pilot intercontinental infrastructure.

Pre-conditions: A number of initiatives across Europe were already accomplished in deploying and operating the European-wide e-Infrastructure with the GEANT and EGEE projects. Several initiatives were already performed also in China as the China National Grid (CNGrid), supported by the key project of the National High-Tech R&D Program (the 863 program), "High Performance Computer and Core Software". Grid e-Infrastructure has a strategic relevance to foster collaboration between researchers from Europe and China for the benefit of e-Science applications and worldwide Grid initiatives.
