Use Case title: Organize and run a Grid School for newcomers with new application(s).

Short description: A Project (e.g., EELA) organizes cost effective international Grid Schools addressed to new users, with the scope of answering the question: “How to gridify your Application in two weeks”.

Actors involved: E-Infrastructure:

  • Network Activity caring of Dissemination and Training, hence of attracting new users with new applications;
  • Support Activity through its Gridification Support Team; - Project Management to organize the school;
  • Local Technical Support Team.

New Communities applying with new application(s) and the corresponding support.

Related Requirements Provide concise information (through standard application form or questionnaire) on community and application(s); Get application(s) selected against selection criteria including maturity of the application, suitability, easiness to be gridified, potential added value, and impact.

Pre-conditions: Infrastructure:

  • Setup a stand alone Grid of a few tens of computing nodes connected to a typical University LAN at the school location;
  • Configure the Grid as Resource Centre;
  • Get access to a middleware repository.

Application communities:

  • Selected application already running steadily on a local cluster;
  • Send to the school student(s) knowing the application.

Steps Before the School:

  • Installation, operation and monitoring of the Grid Test-bed;
  • Monitoring of network performance;

During the school:

  • Gridification of the application
  • Evaluation of the performance and potential outlook

Post-conditions Sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Project to continue running on the Grid

Middleware gLite

Future scenario and integration with EGEE/EGI Collaborate closely with EGEE/EGI and related projects in order to:

  • Share the development of Infrastructure and Application-oriented additional middleware of common interest/use, in the framework of the RESPECT (Recommended External Software Packages for EGEE Communities);
  • Expand the Grid Facility by providing the full set of Grid Services needed by all types of applications in their scientific environment;
  • Extend to the new Resource Centres access to the current EGEE gLite Middleware Repository;
  • Create knowledge repositories federated with the EGEE ones;
  • Organize joint Dissemination and Training events to extend Grid knowledge and expertise;
  • Foster and promote the creation of National Grid Initiatives (NGIs) in each Latin American country through dedicated events, such as workshops, information days, etc., targeted to raise awareness of decision makers.
