Use Case title: Creating and operating a regional infrastructure in Latin America interoperable with EGEE/EGI.

Short description: The EELA (E-infrastructure shared between Europe and Latin America) Project is an European Commission initiative whose objective is to enhance the e-Infrastructures of Latin American countries to the level of those of Europe and foster the international collaboration between the two continents by raising awareness about ways of doing e-Science.

Actors involved: various organisations

Requirements and Pre-conditions:

Infrastructure providers: - Setup a pilot e-infrastructure in LA (interoperable with the existing EGEE one) built on the mature state of the EC funded project “América Latina Interconectada Con Europa” (ALICE) and of its outcome, i.e. the RedCLARA network;

-Grant access to EGEE VOs on the EELA Grid Infrastructure;

Application communities: Having local academic communities willing to use a grid infrastructure to perform their researches;

Implementation Steps

  • Implementation, operation and support of required Certification Authorities (CA);
  • International CA coordination;
  • Set up of Virtual Organisation (VO) infrastructure and maintenance;
  • Installation of the Pilot Test-bed;
  • Test-bed operation and monitoring;
  • definition and implementation of Security Policies & Protocols;
  • survey of application requirements;
  • Selection of the scientific communities relevant for the region;
  • Feasibility study of new network service offerings;
  • Monitoring of network performance;
  • Deployment of new integrated monitoring infrastructure;
  • Organisation of workshops and conferences to disseminate the project activities and attract new communities;
  • Organisation of basic and advanced training events, such as tutorials, and Grid Schools;
  • Get more applications and scientific communities using the Grid Infrastructure and becoming EELA associated partners through MoU signature;
  • Promote a sustainable framework for e-Science in Latin America.
