The aim of Grid-Ireland is to enable communities of users, for example, astrophysicists, geneticists or linguists, to construct virtual organizations above a unique national grid layer.

Grid-Ireland was established in 1999 as an umbrella for Virtual Organisations. It is composed of 18 third level research institute members, managed from Trinity College, Dublin.
