Application Areas
From EGI Knowledge Base
In this section we give an overview of the application areas that are served by Grid infrastructures, along with a list of NGIs involved in each area, related projects and Virtual Organisations.
The categorisation of application areas is somewhat of a challenge. In the NGI survey of early 2007, we identified roughly 22 areas, of which 4 were given as multiple-choice options in the survey (plus one option was given for application independent services), and the rest were write-ins.

In the graph below, the darker blue represents selections of the multiple-choice options provided, while the lighter blue denotes write-ins in the optional field.

[edit] High Energy Physics
- Main article: High Energy Physics
Not surprisingly, HEP is the most popular application area with 17 NGIs (or their related projects) serving this field of research, viz.: Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Sweden, and the Ukraine.
HEP also has a large number of Virtual Organisations.

At least 14 NGIs are involved in the area of Bioinformatics, namely Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, and the Ukraine. In addition, the Czech Republic, Israel and Turkey have biomedicine and health science applications.
